August 23rd 2001
Aug. 23rd, 2001 08:56 pmShe went over to look at the pay phones, contemplating calling him. She took a closer look, and smiled. She saw the message she wrote to him in permanant marker all those years ago imprinted forever on that stupid payphone.
"I love RC forever."
She checked her watch again, but with a smile. It was so like him to be late, and this only added to his charm, at least in this incarnation of their friendship. She hadn't seen him in over 2 years, and as he said on the message on her machine, that was way too long.
She made a sideways glance at the theater. She had been coming to this theater ever since she was a teenager. A teenager in love with Ricky Connor.
She replayed the message in her head again, for the millionth time since she got it 12 hours earlier.
"Hey Emily, this is Ricky. It's been a while, I know. I just want you to know that I've been thinking about you lately. Anyway, I'm going to be at the Evergreen tonight at 8, and I was hoping you'd meet me there. If not, I guess I'll see you later."
She could hardly keep herself from squealing with delight when she heard Ricky's message. There was never a day that went by that she didn't think about him. She knew there wasn't a chance in hell that she'd miss this opportunity to see him.
Oh, she thought about not going. She thought she would close that chapter in her life. After all, she did love Mike, her boyfriend of almost 3 years, but this was Ricky. Ricky who was the first guy to ever bring her roses. Ricky, who made her feel like she was the only girl in the world that would ever really matter to him. Ricky, who she knew she'd never forget.
It was Ricky. And she knew she wouldn't be able to resist seeing him again.
She could still imagine seeing him for the first time, when he was the new guy in her english class. They stared at each other for a full minute before he sat down in the chair in front of her. She took in his long, dark hair, his sparkling green eyes, and the rebellious smile on his face. She knew she had to have him.
And she did.
The lines that had formed for the 8:00 movie were slowly thinning, and she began to wonder if he was ever going to get there. Just as she was about to check her watch again, she felt his hand on her shoulder.
She turned around and smiled.
"Ricky."
